Step Ahead of Varicose Veins!
Varicose veins are swollen, enlarged veins that appear as a twisted ropey protrusion. They are usually dark blue or purple in color, and are raised above the surface of the skin. Varicose veins are caused by damage of the venous valves. The veins are designed to return blood to the heart, and since they are working against gravity, specialized valves are needed to prevent backflow of blood. If the valves are damaged, backflow occurs and varicose veins develop. Most varicose veins are only unsightly nuiscances, but sometimes they can lead to more severe conditions such as edema, Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clots) and venous leg ulcers if left untreated.
It is impossible to prevent all varicose veins from occurring. However, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing varicose veins.
Regular exercise to promote blood circulation
Weight control to avoid excess pressure on your legs
Avoid crossing your legs or ankles while sitting
Elevate your legs whenever possible
Avoid sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time
Wear Jobst compression stockings to aid with circulation
There are also several treatment options you can discuss with your physician to minimize the appearance of varicose veins. These treatments have been significantly improved in the last several years, but are still not guaranteed to permanently reduce varicose veins. Remember, the best way to slow down the development of new varicose veins is to wear graduated compression support stockings everyday.
